 ~     2016 Fall Mystery Quilt     ~

 

This quilt will reflect the warm colors of fall. We suggest you select a light, a medium and a dark fabric.

Clues will be released every Monday starting October 3, 2016. Each clue will complete a portion of the block design. You will be making 16 blocks to complete the mystery quilt. The quilt measures 56” x 56” prior to adding optional borders. Blocks will measure 12” finished.

Fabric Requirements:

  •  1 Yard Medium Print ~ For Blocks   (Suggestion: Gold or Light Brown Color)
  •  1 Yard Dark Print ~ For Blocks   (Suggestion: Burgundy or Dark Brown Color)
  •  1 ¼ Yard Light Print ~ For Block Background    (Suggestion: Cream Color) 

Cutting clues will be released September 26, 2016. It is suggested you pre-cut all clues and place them in marked baggies to help with organizing your block components.

Cutting Instructions: 

Be sure to cut each clue in advance. Place the cut units into a Ziploc bag marked with the clue number. This will help you to keep each portion of the quilt organized. When cutting the sub-cuts be sure to open each strip and cut single units to insure adequate fabric usage.

 From Cream Fabric: Background

  • Cut 2 Strips that measure 4 ¾” x WOF (Width of Fabric)
  • Sub-cut these strips into 16 squares that measure 4 ¾” x 4 ¾” 
  • Place these in bag marked Clue #1
  • Cut 4 Strips that measure 4 3/16” x WOF
  • From these strips you will need to cut 32 squares that measure 4 3/16” x 4 3/16”
  • Be sure to ONLY cut 32, the remaining fabric will be used for a future cut
  • Sub-cut each square into QST (Quarter Square Triangle Units)
  • Place these in the bag marked Clue #2
  • Cut 3 Strips that measure 3 ⅞” x WOF
  • From these strips you will need to cut 32 squares that measure 3 ⅞” x 3 ⅞”
  • You will get 30 squares from these strips. Cut the remaining needed from the remaining fabric from the previous cut) Sub-cut each square into HST (Half Square Triangle Units)
  • Place these in the bag marked Clue #3

From Medium Print Fabric:

  • Cut 7 Strips that measure 3 ⅞” x WOF
  • From these strips you will need to cut 64 squares that measure 3 ⅞” x 3 ⅞”
  • Be sure to ONLY cut 64, the remaining fabric will be used for a future cut
  • Sub-cut each square into HST (Half Square Triangle Units)
  • Place these in the bag marked Clue #3
  • Cut 3 Strips that measure 2” x WOF
  • From these strips you will need to cut 64 squares that measure 2” x 2”
  • You will get 63 squares from these strips. Cut the remaining needed from the remaining fabric from the previous cut
  • Place these in the bag marked Clue #4

From Dark Print Fabric:

  • Cut 4 Strips that measure 4 3/16” x WOF
  • From these strips you will need to cut 32 squares that measure 4 3/16” x 4 3/16”
  • Be sure to ONLY cut 32, the remaining fabric will be used for a future cut
  • Sub-cut each square into QST (Quarter Square Triangle Units)
  • Place these in the bag marked Clue #2
  • Cut 4 Strips that measure 3 ⅞” x WOF
  • From these strips you will need to cut 32 squares that measure 3 ⅞” x 3 ⅞”
  • Be sure to ONLY cut 32, the remaining fabric will be used for a future cut
  • Sub-cut each square into HST (Half Square Triangle Units)
  • Place these in the bag marked Clue #3
  • Cut 1 Strip that measure 2” x WOF
  • From these strips you will need to cut 64 squares that measure 2” x 2”
  • You will get 21 squares from this strip. Cut the remaining needed from fabric in the previous cut and remaining fabric ends.
  • Place these in the bag marked Clue #4

Entry date:  Clue #2 October 3, 2016

  • Gather the QST units of the background fabric and the QST units of the Dark Print
  • Using a ¼” seam, sew a Dark Print to a Background fabric with right sides together
  • You will be sewing on the short side of the unit as shown in the example below

  • You will be creating 8 of these units
  • Be sure to press the seam toward the dark fabric

Entry date:  Clue #3 October 10, 2016

  • Gather the HST units of the background fabric and the HST units of the dark fabric ONLY.
  • Using a 1/4" seam, sew a Dark print to the Background fabric with right sides together. You will be sewing on the long sideof the units as shown in the example below.

  • You will be creating 4 of these units. Be sure to press toward the dark fabric..

 

Entry date:  Clue #4 October 17, 2016

  • Gather the 2" squares of the Medium Print fabric and the 2" squares of the Dark Print fabric.
  • Using a 1/4" seam, sew the squares into 4 patch units. Be sure to press the seams toward the darkest fabric to eliminate bulk.

  • You will be creating 32 of the 4 patch units.

 

Entry Date: Block Contruction Part 1 ~ Coming November 7, 2016

  • We will start by creating setting triangles with the units we have made. 
  • You will need 1- Four Patch unit from sewing Clue #4, 2- HST units that you sewed in Clue #3 and from your baggie marked Clue #3 you will need 2- HST of the Medium
  • Using a 1/4" seam sew and Medium HST unit to the HST block unit as shown 

       

  • You will need to make four of the units shown above for each block.
  • Now we will add these completed units to a 4-patch unit

       

  • Now add the last portion of the setting triangle
  • You will make 2 setting triangles for each block. Repeat these steps.

                

 

Entry Date: Block Construction Part 2 ~ Coming November 14, 2016

  • Now we will create the center portion of the block
  • You will need 1- Background block from Clue #1, the QST units from Clue #2. 
  • We will begin to sew the QST units from Clue #2 into pinwheel blocks.

       

 

  • Now add a completed Pinwheel block to top and bottom of a center background block from Clue #1

Entry Date: Block Construction Part 3 ~ Coming November 21, 2016

  • Add a HST unit to each end of the center block section

  • Press the HST units away from the Pinwheels
  • Now add a Setting Triangle unit to each side of the center block unit. 
  • Press these seams open to eliminate bulk
  • You block is now complete. Repeat these steps to make additional blocks
